WB 7/5/1813: Mary Ann captured on passage from Malta on 4/4/1813, by an American privateer General Tonkins, after 4 1/2 hours action, 1 killed & 3 wounded before the packet struck her colours. The Americans recovered the mail after it had been thrown overboard, as the weight attached to it was insufficient to sink it. The crew, except Mr. Nicholls, the Master, were put on an American ship for Lisbon and from her taken on board the frigate Menalews for Plymouth with a convoy. The packet was sent to New York. The General Tonkins and several of the American privateers are off Cape St. Vincent. [Near Sagres & Lagos, southern Portugal]
FP 23/4/1842: "Advertisement" for Great Liverpool steamer, to depart Southampton 1/4/42 for Alexandria with (Levant & India) mails from Falmouth 2/4. With sailings every ten days from Malta, sailings to Naples, Athens, Constantinople and on the 5th and 15th monthly, sailings from Malta to the Ionian Islands and Patras.
FP 15/7/1837: We understand Government has contracted for merchant steam vessels to convey the mails from Falmouth-Vigo-Lisbon-Cadiz-Gibraltar. The [Admiralty] Lisbon packets now employed will be dispensed with... [part of 'Shipping Gazette' article in FP]
FP 12/8/1837: The Secretary to the Post-Office, w.e.f. September 1837, will send the mails by hired steamer every Monday from Falmouth - Gibraltar, from thence fortnightly to Malta, Greece, Ionian Islands, Egypt and East India on H.M.Steam packets employed in the Mediterranean.
