60: Protection of Packquett (sic) Boats

You are not to impress into our service any of the six persons hereunder belonging to the JANE of Dover whereof Richard Moore is Master [of] the said vessel being employed in our Service as a Packuett (sic) Boat at Dover.
Given under our Court at Whitehall the 6th of October 1688, By His Majesty's Comand (sic) S.Pepys

Pepys said of "Carpenter" Master Shipwright Edmund Dummer; an " ingenious young man but said rarely to have handled a tool."
Dummer was appointed Assistant Surveyor of the Navy in 1689, and in 1692, on the death of his old master, Sir John Tippetts, he was promoted to Surveyor of the Navy.
